2009 current projects and goings on:

Gear Design and D.I.Y.:

I'm puttering around with a set of analog circuit applications for a console 'channel amplifier' module comprised of a 4band EQ, a 3band filter set and a mic/line preamp. The current plan is to do a short production run of these for a custom project. This could evolve in to a product, though, in it's initial form the module will not be compatible with anyone else's slot or lunchbox.

As a distracter (always have to have a distracter) I've been looking at rebuilding some speakers and power amplifiers. I'm hacking around with a rework of the Calibration Standard Laboratories MDM-4 Nearfield Monitor. I like MDM-4's because they are so 'boring' and because I have seven pairs of these things. Two pairs are still working like new (these are from the late-Seventies). The other five pairs are in various states of sad so I'm rebuilding the junkers and experimenting. The same sort of thing is going on with power amps... great steaming heaps of them.

Studio and Facility Systems:

Currently doing some work for a private studio going together in VT, consulting re technical audio systems, wiring, interconnect, power and ground. The room will have an api Legacy console with 64 inputs, a Neve Melbourne as a sidecar, vintage gear, analog tape and ProTools... it's a Fran room - wiring systems prefabricated and installed by Coral Sound... pretty groovy... should be up some time this Summer '09

various other developments, projects and consultations are ongoing...

2009 - In General:

I'm generally laying low this year and emphasizing design and development work however the shop is pretty busy.

Field service and repair: I am generally not doing field service or repair of consoles, tape machines etc.. At this point in time (2009) all your "classic and vintage" audio equipment, consoles, outboard gear, tape machines and so on, need to be rebuilt or restored. Some gear floating around has been rebuilt, but maybe not that well. The bulk of this gear is 25 to 40 (or more)years old and was probably designed to be useful for, maybe ten years, before requiring major service. It's much easier to repair and rebuild things properly in a shop environment where we have the space, lighting, parts, tools and people to do the job right. We are happy to take certain consoles and vintage gear and even an occasional analog tape machine in to the shop for reconditioning, rebuild, repair, restoration, modification, and upgrade work.

In-Shop repair, restoration, upgrade and so forth: There is always a flow of work moving slowly across my bench. I'm being selective about starting anything new that I, personally, have to get deeply involved with because I'm trying to get other stuff done... but my bench is not the only one in the shop. The Exile Shop, is taking various in-shop projects, analog console rebuilds, prefabricated wiring systems, selected vintage gear repairs and restorations... We don't work on everything though, and the shop schedule and workspace space fills up - so it's best to ask.
